Japanese mangas and anime have a wide variety of themes and subjects upon which their stories are based. Everything from ordinary stories about school and everyday experiences to science fiction and fantasy themes can be found as storylines. Whenever the storyline of any manga or anime deals with sex and sexual situations as a major part of the plot it is called hentai (translates as ‘sexually perverse’). There are many types of hentai stories most of which are made by ‘normal’ manga artists and producers, and while they might contain explicit sexual images, they are considered to be ‘mainstream’. When hentai becomes particularly violent, brutal or depicts extreme sexual fetishes, it is usually done by the Japanese doujinshi.
