Bleach is an extremely popular manga (comic) series that was first published in 2001 by Tite Kubo. The series and its characters became an almost instant success becoming one of Japan’s most popular manga publications in history. Bleach is still currently being produced and over 50 million copies have been sold in its seven year history. Like all popular series and characters in Japan, Bleach and its characters have been parodied by the doujinshi who are the independent artists and producers of hentai materials.

Everything from ordinary stories about school and everyday experiences to science fiction and fantasy themes can be found as storylines. Whenever the storyline of any manga or anime deals with sex and sexual situations as a major part of the plot it is called hentai (translates as ‘sexually perverse’). There are many types of hentai stories most of which are made by ‘normal’ manga artists and producers, and while they might contain explicit sexual images, they are considered to be ‘mainstream’. When hentai becomes particularly violent, brutal or depicts extreme sexual fetishes, it is usually done by the Japanese doujinshi.

In Japan pornographic materials are labeled ‘18-kin’ (18 and above) or seijin manga (adult manga), and while most hentai materials fall into that category, hentai does not mean pornographic (it actually translates as ‘sexually perverse’). Hentai materials always contain a sexual element as the main theme of the publication, where the subject is humorous or serious, explicit sexual acts are usually a part of the storyline. While most Japanese hentai is in the form of mangas (comics), there are a growing number of hentai anime (cartoons) being produced each year.
